2008 Citizen Public Safety Academy

The City of Auburn’s Public Safety Department will begin the 2008 Citizen Public Safety Academy on Thursday, March 6. The academy, open to Auburn residents ages 18 and older, will run for 10 consecutive weeks on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. Graduation will be held on Thursday, May 8.

During the training period, participants will learn about the different areas of public safety, including Police, Fire, Communications, and Codes Enforcement services. Citizens interested in participating in the academy are encouraged to apply early due to limited seating. The program is free for participants.

“It will give our citizens a chance to get an up-close and personal view of the way the department goes about their business of protecting the community,” Auburn police Capt. Tom Stofer said.

“Attendees should commit to attending most or all of the classes to get the program’s full benefit”, Stofer said.

Participants will get the chance to shoot a variety of weapons at the police firing range, learn how to put out a fire and become CPR certified.

The City of Auburn has been notified by CSX Railroad that company officials have scheduled the replacement of crossties and portions of rail at several Auburn railroad crossings beginning Monday, January 21. Work will begin at the Saugahatchee Road crossing on Monday, January 21 and continue westward until all tracks and crossings have been repaired. During construction, each crossing is expected to remain closed for 24 hours. Traffic will not be permitted to cross the tracks while repairs are being made.

CSX is expected to provide the City with frequent updates regarding the closings. A list of updated closings will be posted as the top story on the City’s website at www.auburnalabama.org. Citizens are encouraged to check the website frequently for updates.

Use Glenn Avenue Entrance for Sam’s Club Grand Opening

Auburn’s newest retailer, Sam’s Club, will hold its official grand opening on Thursday, January 17 at 9:45 a.m. Citizens are encouraged to use the Glenn Avenue entrance for Sam’s Club until construction at Exit 57-Bent Creek Interchange is completed. The new Glenn Avenue traffic light at the Sam’s Club entrance is now fully operational and ready for use.

Academy Sports to open in August

Auburn will soon get a new sports store, Academy Sports & Outdoors, which plans to locate next to the soon-to-open Sam’s Club.

Construction on the approximately 85,000-square-foot store is scheduled to start in mid-February, Academy Real Estate Director John Hay said.

The stores, based in the Houston suburb of Katy, Texas, offer various items from sports apparel to outdoor supplies to exercise equipment.

Academy is finalizing the purchase of the property, and Hay said his company would like to open sometime in August.
