Aerowire, a company specializing in wireless broadband systems, has started up in Auburn.
“We’re local folks doing business locally,” said Aerowire president F.D. “Butch” Brock. “When you call our customer service, you’ll be talking to someone right here in Auburn.”
The company hopes to capitalize on the burgeoning wireless market. ABI Research, a leading market analysis and technology industry adviser, estimates that more than 325 million converged WiFi/cellular phones will be shipped by 2011. This represents a 183 percent annual growth rate from the 1.8 million shipped in 2006. In total, more than 200 million WiFi equipped products sold last year.
Brock said even with out the statistics, WiFi’s popularity would just be common sense.
“Why tether yourself to a cable or telephone cord in your home, apartment or office when wireless technology gives you the freedom to move about while still maintaining access to your work or loved ones?” he said.
First Realty Property Management currently manages some 1,500 units in the Auburn area and plans a target rollout of the WiFi service in a two- to three-block area around the Auburn University campus.
